Experts Dispute Teen's "Tattoo Sleep" Tale

Post by Donna.♥ on Fri Jun 19, 2009 9:45 am

There is no way a teenager could have fallen asleep as 56 stars were inked on her face, several tattooing experts have told ninemsn.

The case of 18-year-old Belgian Kimberley Vlaeminck has generated widespread attention this week after she claimed she asked for three small tattooed stars but woke up "mutilated".

But tattoo and pain specialists have rubbished the teenager's story, hinting there is probably more to the tale than Ms Vlaeminck is letting on.

"No way in the world ó not on a teenager's face, it's so tender," said Morag Draper, manager of The Tattoo Gallery in Adelaide.

"It would be like having a cat jump and scratch you when you were sunburnt ó with claws out."

The face contains sensitive nerve endings that would make it virtually impossible to relax enough to fall into a sleep, according to cosmetic surgeon Dr Kourosh Tavakoli.

"The nasal tube, for example, is extremely sensitive Ö we know with collagen and Botox that even the tiniest needle can be very sensitive," he said.

"Unless she's heavily sedated, or maybe intoxicated, it's very hard to believe she could be asleep." (Watch more: Teen's face still raw)

Several other tattooists approached by ninemsn said they would have refused Ms Vlaeminck's job on ethical grounds.

"There is no chance in hell we would tattoo an 18-year-old girl on the face ó it's a job-stopper," said Ilana Vandersluis from Skin Deep Tattoo in Sydney.

"She would've had to be pretty determined to have that job done."

The tattooist, Rouslan Toumaniantz, yesterday offered to pay half the cost of having Ms Vlaeminck's tattoos removed, but maintained he inked the teenager exactly as she had requested. (Read more: Tattooist backs down)

But Dr Tavakoli said it would be impossible for laser removal technology to repair the skin fully so the teenager did not retain some pigmentation.

"She'll basically be scarred for life," he said.

Ms Draper said a tattoo procedure involving that many stars would probably take around and hour-and-a-half, making it hard to believe the inking happened while Ms Vlaeminck's father ate an ice cream outside, as the teenager claimed.

The Adelaide-based tattooist says her studio refuses to do work on the face because it is so sensitive.

"There are veteran, seasoned customers who can zone out while being tattooed ó but not on the face," she said.

Ok first of all, she looks disgusting. Second of all, she DID NOT fall asleep. That's ridiculous. I've had a tattoo before and mine is only small but i could not have fallen asleep, hers is huge. You CANNOT fall asleep through that unless you were intoxicated or high.

These are my theories:
a) she was drugged or intoxicated and she didn't know she was doing, then when she 'woke up' she panicked and claimed she only asked for three small stars.
b) she was awake during the whole thing and told everyone she was asleep coz she didn't want to admit she asked for the full face.

Personally I don't feel sorry for her. What was she doing there anyway? It says she's 18 yrs old (she looks 12) so shouldn't she have known what she was doing?

To make things worse, have you seen the tattoo artist (look below)?

The tattooist who inked 56 stars on the face of a Belgian teenager who claimed to be sleeping at the time has offered to pay half of the cost to have them removed.

Although Rouslan Toumaniantz refuses to accept blame for the extreme artwork that Kimberley Vlaminck claims has turned her into a "freak", he has accepted that 18-year-old is unhappy with the final result and wants to make amends.

"I maintain that she absolutely agreed that I tattoo those 56 stars on the left side of her face," Belgian newspaper La Derniere Heure reported Mr Toumaniantz as saying.

"A witness, a woman who was present, has already been questioned by police, and she confirms it.

Have you had a bad tattoo experience? Tell us here.

"But be that as it may, Kimberley is unhappy and it is not my wish to have an unsatisfied client."

Ms Vlaminck's family launched legal action against the operator The Tattoo Box in the southeast Belgian city of Courtrai, claiming damages as well as $18,400 for laser removal.

Mr Toumaniantz, who himself is almost entirely covered in tattoos and piercings, says that the bizarre incident may even be good for business.

"I don't regret it," he said.

"To tell you the truth, this has given me some publicity."

The teenager claims she fell asleep in the artist's chair after requesting three stars around her left eye.

With her approving father outside eating ice cream, she allegedly drifted off to sleep while 56 black stars were needled into her face and nose.

"I cannot go out on to the street, I am so embarrassed," Ms Vlaminck said.

"I think he didnít understand what I wanted. He spoke only fractured English and French.

"But I explicitly said in my native tongue, French, and also in a little bit of English when he looked confused, that I wanted three little stars only near my left eye."

The tattooist maintains his teenage client was happy with the work and the transaction only soured when her father and boyfriend saw the design.

"She asked for 56 stars and thatís what she got," he said.

What an incredibly silly situation to be in lol Razz. I don't fully buy that she was sleeping the whole time either.

I don't think anyone should tattoo their face, let alone an 18 yo girl. Even that celebrity looks odd, but it's not too bad considering. She definitely asked for the full face. There's no other explanation, otherwise she would have told him to stop. She saw it after, panicked, and told everyone a fake story.

Wow Donna for someone who seems to love tattoos so much and you don't even know who Kat Von D is? Maybe its time to update your knowledge on celebs instead of focusing on has-been celebs.

Lay off the girl, so shes done something stupid and tried to blame it on someone else. Who isn't guilty of doing that before?

Yeah, it is an odd story. She probably thought she'd made a mistake. Either that or the whole story is fake... Suspect

No I don't know who that is lol, her name sounds familiar though. When I was searching for tattoo pictures I didn't exactly look for ones that would go on my face. And what has-been celebs do u mean?

UPDATE:

A Belgian teenager has reportedly admitted she was lying, after claiming a tattoo artist gave her 56 stars over one side of her face instead of the three she asked for.

Kimberley Vlaminck had said she fell asleep during the procedure, and woke up with a lot more than she bargained for.

However, the UK's Daily Telegraph reports that Vlaminck has confessed she did not nod off, and was fully aware of what was happening.

She apparently cried foul afterwards because when her father saw the stars, he was angry with her.

Ms Vlaminck told a Dutch TV crew: "I asked for 56 stars and initially adored them. But when my father saw them, he was furious. So I said I fell asleep and that the tattooist had made a mistake."

The tattoo artist, Rouslan Toumaniantz, had denied he had made a mistake, saying the teen wanted all 56 stars. Police started an investigation into the teenager's complaint.

Toumaniantz still initially agreed to pay for half of the treatment to remove the tattoos, after Vlaminck said she wanted to keep the stars on her forehead.

Told u Razz

If she initially adored them, then I guess I don't blame her for doing what she did.

Not surprised! The tattoo artist isn't obliged to pay for half of those tattoos to be removed since she asked for it.
